What is White Collar Kickboxing
Fighting in a kickboxing ring is a life changing experience. From the training and skill acquisition, to the pre fight nerves, to the goose bumps and adrenalin rush as the crowd chants your name during the contest.

Only on leaving the ring will you realise that you have completed a truly amazing journey.

White Collar Kickboxing challenges you to be a contender, to step outside your comfort zone, and swap the safety of your office or study chair for the thrill and adrenalin rush of the kickboxing ring.

At Waikato Thai Kickboxing we strive to bring the benefits of Thai Kickboxing (Muay Thai) to a new audience. We believe that kickboxing can help individuals in their everyday lives; whether dealing with pressure situations, improving self-confidence or calling on courage to overcome fears.

Anyone who competes or participates in our programmes will feel enhanced both mentally and physically and will be equipped to meet the challenges of life head on.

Our Programmes
All of our programmes are based on a professional Thai Kickboxer’s training regime, with some modifications. These are not aerobic or circuit boxing classes. Our philosophy is that in order to get the full benefits of Thai Kickboxing, your training should reflect that of a professional Muay Thai fighter.

You will adhere to a regular training schedule, eat intelligently, drink responsibly and live wisely.

This 6 months programme is open to anyone with minimal or no kickboxing experience. It is an intense programme that takes you from wrapping your hands for the first time to fighting centre stage on your very own big fight night.

During the programme you will learn everything you need to succeed in the ring; how to punch, kick and knee like a professional fighter.

The programme climaxes in a big fight night when you are matched with an opponent of similar skill level and experience.

Safety
Safety and wellbeing are of paramount importance to us. We achieve the balance of being a high adrenalin sport without being dangerous. Of course as with any contact sport there are risks however we mitigate many of these risks by modifying the fight rules to exclude elbows, only punches, kicks and knees are allowed. We also provide additional safety equipment and adhere to strict safety guidelines (as below).

As with any training programme white-collar kickboxing requires in depth evidence that our white-collar warriors are fully able to compete with a clean bill of health. Appropriate medical doctors can advise on all necessary requirements. With the right supervision and safety measures white-collar kickboxing is safe, enjoyable and rewarding.

My fight experience: Mike Tames, Tax Consultant

Mike was doing his Bms(hons) in Accounting and Finance and an LLB at Waikato University. He now works as a tax consultant for PWC. He relates his fight experience here.

“Eight weeks out from the fight and the initial apprehension and nervousness I had about fighting kicked in.

On the day of my fight, after a brief warm up, I walked out of the changing rooms and into the ring. My entrance music and the sounds of my friends cheering really pumped me up, the adrenalin was flowing as the bell sounded for round one…

The pressure and intensity of being in the ring really highlighted how far I could push myself if I was willing to overcome my fear. At the end of the fight when my hand was raised in the air I felt immense pride and satisfaction, not only had I won the fight but I had also conquered my nerves and learnt a lot about my own mental strength throughout the process.

The whole experience of training and competing in my first fight was life altering; from the mental determination required to continually push myself in training to overcoming the tension and utilising the adrenalin in the ring to the relief and satisfaction once it was over. I know I can take away a lot from this whole experience and apply it to my studies and my future professional career.”

Mike’s experience has shown that mental preparedness is as important as physical preparedness in any fight. To perform well in fight, management of fear and anxiety is just as important as good skill and physical condition.
In the many weeks leading up to and during fight, the body is going through chemical transformation by adrenalin. A fighter who is able to control it will be energised and buoyed by it when fighting in the ring. Failure to manage it results in oppressive fear and fatigue. Muay Thai training and fighting can help one to learn to manage fear and anxiety. In addition, after stepping into the ring with a trained fighter, Mike now has the confidence to defend himself against any untrained person in a self-defence situation.
